The night was undoubtedly a silver lining for the star.
Last night, the 2019 American Music Awards took place and it was Taylor Swift’s night. Ahead of the show, it was revealed that Swift would be honoured with the Artist of the Decade award – however the Me! singer also scooped up another five awards on the night.
She beat out Drake, Halsey and Ariana Grande to take home Artist of the Year, as well as Favourite Music Video for You Need to Calm Down, Favourite Female Artist Pop/Rock, Favourite Album Pop/Rock for Lover and Favourite Artist – Adult Contemporary.
These five wins (as well as her Artist of the Decade trophy) take her trophy total from across the years to 29, making her the most decorated artist in the awards’ history. She surpasses Michael Jackson who previously held the record with 24 wins.
In her final speech of the night to accept Artist of the Year, Swift said, “The last year of my life has had some of the most amazing times and also some of the hardest things I’ve gone through…and a lot of them are things that haven’t been public. I wanted to thank you so much for being the thing that has been a constant in my life.” She also thanked “the fans who have hung in there for 15 years of me doing this” adding, “Thank you for being there and for caring.”
Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello also walked away with a huge win, taking home the prize for Collaboration of the Year for Señorita, whilst 17 year old Billie Eilish scooped New Artist of the Year and Favourite Artist – Alternative Rock. K-Pop band BTS also scored a few wins with Tour of the Year, Favourite Duo or Group – Pop/Rock and Social Media Artist, whilst Khalid won Favourite Song – Soul/R&B for Talk, Favourite Album – Soul/R&B for Free “Spirit” and Favourite Male Artist – Pop/Rock.
